Counseling

At various points in an individual’s and a family’s life, barriers to healthy relationship arise, and while a community of support can at times offer guidance through healing, there are times when that supportive community is not available or life situations seem to create insurmountable obstacles.

counseling with kids

For a lot of families that I work with, they are looking for someone to help them find better understanding of what is going on with their kiddo. When I am working with kids, it is almost always beneficial to work with the parents as well, and while it can be important for a child to have a safe place to talk - or play - as they sort out what is going on in their lives, the parents of younger kids are often needing space to do the same. In my work with kids, play therapy is often part of our work, and this is based on the premise that as kids are still finding their language for feelings and experiences, they are able to communicate through play, and even work through certain issues in their play. In parenting work, we talk more about your understanding of your child, and we work on strategies for understanding, care, and development, given your child’s unique situation that has brought you here.

counseling with teens

In working with teens, parent coaching might or might not be helpful at this stage of development. For some teens, they just need a place to safely talk with someone who isn’t mom or dad, but is an adult who can offer understanding and a different perspective than their friends as they make decisions. It is often still really helpful for parents to be involved in counseling, but confidentiality for the teen (with some exceptions here, like threats of self- harm or being hurt by others) is really important, so we navigate this a bit differently than we do with younger kids. For many teens, we are working on what needs are being met in their current way of doing things, and what’s the cost that comes with their decisions, as well as sorting through other solutions to get those needs met. Sometimes, we work on new skills to help them better cope with their life’s challenges.

counseling with college students

It’s a really unique moment in your life, where you finally have more room to explore who you are and what you really want. For many of us at this season, we have already had questions about how we have seen other adults do their lives and what we do and don’t want to repeat, but college is often a powerful place for us to make significant changes. For some, this time of life is really difficult, and even overwhelming. I see our work as collaborative in sorting through your life and what has brought you here. Sometimes, this is short-term work, and sometimes, your situation asks us to stay together a bit longer. Either way, we learn how to listen to your story with kindness and find a way through together.

counseling with adults

Our work is primarily collaborative, one in which, together, we sort out a way through. For some, this involves a short-term, solution-oriented approach with more practical interventions and support. For others, our work takes more time. As we have been hurt in relationship, we are also mended in relationship, and the therapeutic relationship provides a safe context for repair. Our work is not to erase what has been done, but to acknowledge and begin to find new ways of coping with it as well as new ways of relating that can interrupt its repetition in your life. In both approaches, you are the expert on you, and my role is to hold your story – to bear your struggle with you – with kindness, and with the hope that you will not bear it alone.

LPC Supervision

If you are here to find out more about my supervisory role with LPC Interns or practicum/internship graduate students, I would encourage you to explore what we are doing over at Oakwood Roots. As Clinical Director for both Oakwood Roots and my group’s practice, The Oakwood Collaborative, I love working with students and provisionally licensed clinicians as they sort out who they are as therapists.
